Family Devotions, 1st - 4th Grade - God opposes the proud but favors the humble.
FOR STARTERS:
Have a family contest to see whom can build the tallest tower out of blocks, straws, paper clips, or whatever building supplies you choose. While you build, use Pig Latin to communicate. This play language drops the first consonant of each word, attaches it to the end, and adds “ay.” Oday ouya understanday? (Do you understand?) After the towers are complete, have bragging contests to describe one’s building. This all should seem pretty silly. So it was silly in God’s eyes to watch the arrogance of men building the Tower of Babel.
READ THE BIBLE:
Read about the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11:1-9.
KEY VERSE:
1 Peter 5:5b: “…God opposes the arrogant but favors the humble.”
TALK ABOUT IT:
PRAYER POWER:
Close with prayer admitting times of arrogance and having tried to build a tower for our own glory. Ask to become like Jesus, who humbled himself to serve others by giving his life for us. Ask for Jesus’ help to serve others by being kind to them. Also pray for others that speak or look differently than us
Family Time Option
One day this week, try…
God confused the language of people when they arrogantly built their tower. Today people learn other languages so they can share the good news of Jesus. Pray for mission efforts in other countries, especially those your church is supporting. Check out www.worldvision.org for great ideas on how you can pray for others in foreign countries and even sponsor a child.

KEY VERSE:
1 Peter 5:5b: “…God opposes the arrogant but favors the humble.”
TALK ABOUT IT:
- Why did the people want to build a tower? (To make a name for themselves.)
- What did God do to stop them? (He mixed up their language so they wouldn’t understand each other.)
- Why do you think God did not want them to build a tower? (God wanted to stop them from thinking they could do everything on their own. That is an
- attitude of rebellion.)
- What do you think it was like when the people were trying to build but could not understand each other? (Confusing, funny, frustrating.)
- Do some people not like others because they look differently or have different colored skin?
- Read 1 Peter 5:5. Who does God oppose? Who does God favor?
- How does God want us to treat other people that are different from us?
