FOR STARTERS:
In advance, collect a half dozen rocks and a shoebox. Let each family member hold a rock and describe something they worried about this last week. Then place the rock in the box and pass it to another. Have a contest to see who can hold the full box the longest with his arms completely extended.

READ THE BIBLE: Matthew 11:28-30

KEY VERSE: Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to me, all who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Place my yoke over your shoulders, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble. Then you will find rest for yourselves because my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

TALK ABOUT IT:

  • What is a yoke? (A wooden bar placed over the neck of work animals so they can pull plows or carts.)
  • What does Jesus tell us to do with our heavy burdens? (Come to him and let him carry them.)
  • What does it mean to take Jesus’ yoke and learn from him? (It means we trust him as our Savior and we trust him to help us with our problems.)
  • What does Jesus mean when he says his yoke is easy and his burden is light? (When we trust in Jesus, it is just like putting on his yoke, which is empty of our worries and failures.)
  • Read the last part of verse 29. What will Jesus do when we trust him? (Give us rest.)
  • What burdens do you and your family members need to give to Jesus?

PRAYER POWER:
Pray to lay your burdens on Jesus. Thank him for the peace and rest we receive when we trust him to carry our load.

Family Time Option
One day this week, try…
A parent “kidnaps” the rest of the family and loads them into the car, not telling them where they are going. Simply say, “There is something very special I want you to see.” Take along a blanket or folding chairs. Take the family to a park or a picturesque place to watch the sunset. Ask, “Why do you think God chose to make sunsets beautiful?” As you discuss how wonderful God is, consider this event as an experience in spiritual rest.
