Family Devotions, 1st - 4th Grade - God Fits Us Together in Families

FOR STARTERS: Parents share the story of how you met and what characteristics attracted you to each other. Invite children to share what kind of characteristics they would want in a spouse when they grow up.

READ THE BIBLE: Genesis 2:18-25

KEY VERSE: Genesis 2:18a: “Then the LORD God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone.’”

TALK ABOUT IT: God designed the family beginning with a husband and a wife. The reason God designed families was not only to populate the world, he also wanted the family to care for one another with God’s love. According to Genesis, why did God create families? (He did not want man to be alone.) Who in your family is best at showing God’s love to others? Tell about a time you helped someone in your family. What will be the best thing about starting your own family some day?

Children today are commonly exposed to the concept that homosexuality is an alternative lifestyle for a family. What do you say to someone who says, “Two men can get married to each other and be a family.” God’s Word speaks against this in Romans 1:27. Yet, God’s Word says we are to love people and help them if they have broken lives or broken families.

How did God adopt you into his family? Read Ephesians 1:5. It was through God’s Son, Jesus, that we are adopted into God’s family. It can be pointed out, as well, that baptism is like the official adoption papers. (See Galatians 3:26-4:7.)

PRAYER POWER: Thank God for fitting you together in your family. Also thank God for adopting us into his family through our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Family Time Option
One day this week, try…
Let each family member design a one-hour “family special.” The family special must be something the entire family can do together. The person designing the family special is responsible for making the plan and deciding what everyone will do. Schedule the times for these family specials on a calendar, perhaps one per week.
