FOR STARTERS: Gather the family around a mirror. Have one person stand still while another family member uses a water-based marker to sketch the outline of that person on the mirror. After several have tried this, talk about how much those outlines look like the real people. They are but images of that person. This is similar to how we are made in God’s image. Sometimes we only look at the outside of people, but the real person is on the inside. That person is made in God’s image. That person has a spirit that is completely unique and will continue to live even if the body dies.

READ THE BIBLE: Genesis 1:26-27, 2 Corinthians 5:17, and Galatians 5:22-23

KEY VERSE: Genesis 1:26: “Then God said, ‘Let us make humans in our image, in our likeness.’”

TALK ABOUT IT: What do you think it means to be made in God’s image? (To look something like God, to have some of his characteristics.) How do you look like God? (We have spirits that can live forever.) Humans were originally made perfect and holy but because of sin, man ruined his image. God did not leave us that way. According to 2 Corinthians 5:17, what did God do for us? (“Whoever is a believer in Christ is a new creation.”)

When we believe in Jesus, we are made a new creation. Our spirits are made alive and we will be able to spend forever with God, even after we die. It also means that through faith in Jesus, God sees us as completely forgiven or perfect in his sight. Though our image of God is discolored with sin, when we believe in Jesus, we are remade in his image. In Galatians 5:22-23 God tells us what our new life in Jesus looks like. We have his characteristics of love, joy, peace, etc. We can be thankful that God made us in his image and we have a spirit that can live forever.

PRAYER POWER: Close with a prayer thanking God that each of us was made special in his image. Even when that image was fouled up with our sin, he made a way for us to have the image and likeness of Jesus.

Family Time Option
One day this week, try…
Look at family photo albums with pictures of past generations. What physical characteristics are passed down from family member to family member? Parents, describe what spiritual characteristics you would like to see passed down from generation to generation.
