FOR STARTERS: Every family member can share a time in which he did something that he was embarrassed about or something he did that was wrong and he tried to cover it up. Sometimes one covers up what he did wrong by blaming others. Ask for someone to share about a time he got blamed for something he did not do.

READ THE BIBLE: Read Genesis 3, how Adam and Eve hid and blamed others when they sinned.

KEY VERSE: Genesis 3:15b: “He will crush your head, and you will bruise his heel.” (The first promise that Jesus will destroy Satan’s power of sin.)

TALK ABOUT IT: What tree were Adam and Eve forbidden to eat fruit from? (The tree in the middle of the garden.) What would happen if they ate the fruit? (They would die.) After Adam and Eve ate the fruit, what did they do? (They both realized they were naked. They sewed fig leaves together and made clothes for themselves. They tried to hide.) When God asked Adam and Eve what happened, who did Adam blame? Who did Eve blame? (Adam blamed Eve and Eve blamed the snake.) What did God do to help fix the problem of their sin? (Read verse 15. God promised to send a Savior!) How did Jesus crush Satan’s head or take away his power? (He died on the cross to make the forgiveness of our sins possible.) God also said Satan would bruise Jesus’ heel. That means Jesus would be hurt in this battle against Satan. How was he hurt? (Jesus was hurt by having to die for our sins.)

Think of a time you hid because you did something that was wrong. When we do things wrong against God, we feel guilt and want to hide from him. Does God want us to blame others when we do something wrong? Does God want us to hide from him when we do something wrong? (God wants us to tell him about the wrong things we have done. He wants us to be able to tell him we are sorry and need his forgiveness.)

PRAYER POWER: Pray for forgiveness for things done wrong. Pray that God would forgive us for blaming others and hiding from him instead of running to him when we commit sin. If we confess our sins, God forgives them and cleanses us from everything we have done wrong (1 John 1:9). Your sins are forgiven so you can live forever with God.

Family Time Option
One day this week, try…
Play a family game of hide and seek. This can especially be fun when the lights are turned off and the adults also hide. Have a central “base” where players can return to be safe.
After playing this game, remind players that God came looking for Adam and Eve when they were hiding because of their sin. He also set them free by giving them the safe place of Jesus to return to.
