Bad Advice for teens: "Follow your passion"
Why does Jeremiah warn us about the danger of "Following our hearts?"
Here's what he says:
The heart is deceitful above all things,
and desperately sick;
who can understand it?
“I the Lord search the heart
and test the mind,
to give every man according to his ways,
according to the fruit of his deeds.”
If the heart is "deceitful", should you be telling your child to "follow his/her passion"?
I don't think so.
First watch, then consider sharing the following video with your teenager. Then plan to have some prolonged conversations with her or him about how to plan ahead for meaningful life work.
And as always, use the space below to share your own responses to this video and the concept of "following your passions".
Oh, and as far as what Jeremiah is saying about the alternative to "follow your passion"; what Jeremiah is saying is to allow the Lord to have full access to your heart. When we open our hearts up fully to God, allowing him to surgically remove those desires which don't belong, we more and more become what Paul calls, "...the righteousness of God."
Just don't expect the Bible to tell your daughter whether to become an electrician or a lawyer... God is walking with her always to be a mirror, a curb, and a guide while she figures this stuff out. And He has given her parents and a church to support her along the way!
